    • James' naturalization papers say he was born in 1818. His obituary says he was 77 yrs., 4 mos., 4 days, which means he was born in 1819. His baptism record originally listed his birthdate as 5 June 1819, but he was baptized 6 April 1819. So I'm taking the 1818 as correct.

An 1830 description: "Crompton, a township in the parish of Oldham cum Prestwich, hundred of Salford. Inhabitants 6482. 10 miles N.E. from Manchester. This is a bleak and sterile district: it partakes of a portion of the cotton manufacture. The two separate hamlets, High and Low Crompton, give name to the township." Family tradition says they were shipwrecked in the Canary Islands on their journey to the US. One of the few items they could save was a small brown luster ware pitcher, in the possession of John Brierly McCall. While I cannot confirm this (January 2006) there is a record showing the ship Suviah was wrecked in the Florida Keys, 3 Sept 1840 <http://www.adp.fsu.edu/wreck_list.html> carrying 1187 bales of cotton.

      FORMER MILLBURY MAN DIES.
James Brierly Passes Away at His Home In This City

James Brierly, for many years a prominent citizen and business man of Millbury, died at his residence, at 6 Dale street, Worcester, at 11 o'clock last night. He had been in feeble health for some years, but the immediate cause of his death was congestion of the lungs. Mr. Brierly was born in England 77 years ago and came to America in 1841. His first business venture was in North Oxford, in 1846, where he manufactured cotton goods. Later he located in Millbury at what is known as the Pinafore mill, now owned by the Rhodes Warp company. At about the same time he was also engaged in the manufacture of paper at a mill located where Lapham's mill now stands.
In 1851 he became associated with the late Jason Emerson, under the firm name of Brierly & Emerson, in the manufacturing of print cloth in a mill upon the present site of the West Side flax mill. The old mill was destroyed by fire many years ago.
Mr. Brierly served upon the board of selectmen while a resident of Millbury, was a member of the First Congregational Church of that town and was very highly esteemed.
He leaves a widow, two sons, and three daughters, one of the latter being Mrs. Charles A. Geer of Millbury. The funeral will take place from his late residence in Worcester at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. Rev. George A. Putnam will officiate. The burial will be in Hope cemetery, Worcester.

    Notes
    • From the Centennial History of Millbury: "James Brierly, formerly a cotton manufacturer, was also, in the fifties, engaged in making paper at the old Burbank Mill in Bramanville. He was among the most respected citizens of the town, a man of strict integrity, and commanded the esteem of his associates. His useful life added much to the material prosperity and moral elevation of the community." [pg. 416]
