Spouse: Benjamin F. Brierly. Sarah Eliza Bancroft and Benjamin F. Brierly were married on 16 January 1872 in Millbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts.
He was the son of James and Elizabeth; she was born in Millbury, the daughter of Solomon and Harriett Bancroft. His second marriage and her first, married by Geo. A. Putnam, clergyman. Walter Thwings in Livermore Family in America says her parents were married 14 Sept 1820 (pg. 169).
1870 Millbury Census shows him age 42, a manufacturer (already a citizen), his wife Ann, age 37, daughter Sarah 19, son Frank 15, son Walter 9. They are in the house next door to the family headed by H. L. Bancroft, age 49, his wife Martha age 43, and their children: Henry H. 22, George F. 18, Charles L. 15, Walter M. 12, Joseph H. 8, Hatty M. 5. Last two in the household are Harriett Bancroft 72, (likely H. L.'s widowed mother) and Sarah E. Bancroft age 47, a clerk (likely H. L.'s sister and presumably never married). This must be the Sarah E. Bancroft (born 3 Aug 1823 [Millbury Centennial History]) who was Benjamin Brierly's second wife. Massachusetts VR (Vol. 246, pg. 283) says they were married 16 January 1872.

BRIERLY, BENJAMIN (1900 U.S. Census)
MASSACHUSETTS , WORCESTER, 7-WD WORCESTER
Age: 72, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: ENGL
Series: T623 Roll: 697 Page: 169
Benjamin Brierly at 42 Woodland Road, Worcester
Born October, 1828, age 71; married for 49 years; he and both his parents born in England. Naturalized in 1848, 52 years in this country (1848); he's an office clerk; owns dwelling, mortgaged, it's a house not farm. Sarah E. Brierly his wife, born August 1823, age 76; she and both her parents were born in Massachusetts

QUESTION:
The 1900 census says Benjamin & Sarah have been married 49 years - hence 1851. That's the year their daughter Sarah was born, and before the birth of their children Frank (est 1855) and Walter (est 1861). For the moment (Dec 2005) I'll assume the 1900 Census was wrong - that they were married about 29 years at that time, not 49.
