Moses Greer Sr. was born on 2 Jun 1744 in Gunpowder River, Baltimore County, Maryland. He died on 10 May 1834 in Franklin County, Virginia. "A letter from the Veterans Administration, Washington, D.C., dated April 9, 1938, gives a great deal of information and it is quoted: "Pension Claim File S-8609, Certificate # 2896 issued December 8, 1832; rate $ 460.00 per annum; commenced March 4, 1831; Virginia Agency. Moses Greer was born in the state of Maryland, June 2, 1744. While residing in Bedford County (that part later called Franklin County), Moses Greer was Captain of Militia, and in 1779, served six months under Colonel James Callaway, stationed at the lead mines in Grayson County, VA. He was commissioned, October 28, 1780, Lieutenant in Virginia troops; served two tours of three months each. Also other tours in Colonel Charles Lynch's and Colonel William Leftwich's Virginia Regiments and was on the march to Yorktown when the British surrendered. His entire service amounted to two years. He was allowed a pension on Application September 12, 1832; then a resident of Franklin County and was referred to as Moses Greer, Sr. (Copy of this pension application in ROYAL HERITAGE OF THE GREERS by Carolyn Beal, pages 137 - 138, which gives Moses age as 88 years in 1832.) After the Revolution, he elected to the State Legislature from Franklin County and at the time of his application, was Presiding Judge of same county. He died May 10, 1843 (sic - apparently Torrence reversed the date, which should have been 1834), leaving children. In 1832, Moses Greer, Jr., was a Justice of the Peace in Franklin County and stated at that time, that he had served several tours under Moses Greer, Senior, against the Tories."

"Moses Greer had 40 acres of land in Franklin County, Virginia. On November 10, 1792, this land was to be divided and laid out into town lots to be called "Wisenberg"." (HENNING'S STATUTES, Vol. 13, pages 505 and 586.)

"Moses Greer was a surveyor, farmer and business man. In politics, he was a Jeffersonian Republican, and as such was elected a delegate from Franklin County to the Convention of the Legislature of Virginia which met in Richmond, before the 1800 election. His son, William Greer, kept up a family Bible which is now in possession of Mr. John W. Greer, of Kingston Spring, TN, and from this Bible data for this family is derived. He married prior to 1775, Ann Nancy Bailey, born on Gunpowder River, Baltimore County, Maryland, November 30, 1743. As a matter of passing interest, there is a record in York County, PA, showing that John Bailey, of Baltimore, married January 16, 1812, Miss Hanna Greer, of York. This shows that the York and Baltimore members of the family did intermarry." (GREAR - GREER - GREERE - GRIER by Robert M. Torrence, A.B., F.G.S.P., F.I.A.G; 110 Edgevale Road, Baltimore 10, Maryland, pages 24 - 25.)

Information about the family and descendants of Moses Greer has been recorded in PIONEER FAMILIES OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1935 by Marshall Wingfield, page 86; DAR Abstracts (369.1 D26L), Vol. 119, page 28; DAR Records #68406; and research notes of L. (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Some researchers, including Richard L. Greer of Marion, VA, show this Moses Greer to have been a son of Moses Greer, born about 1712. This appears to be incorrect, as shown by other researchers, cited above. Moses' (born in 1812) son, Moses, was born in 1755, according to St. John's Parish Records. This Moses, son of William, was born in 1844, according to his pension records.)

1210. Weatherston Shelton Greer was born on 31 May 1800 in Franklin County, VA. He died on 31 Mar 1870 in Pikeville, Bledsoe County, TN. He was buried in Wesley Chapel, near Pikeville, TN. "Weatherston Shelton Greer was born in the year 1800, in Franklin County, VA. He married about the year 1820, Mary Kyle, who was born in 1803 in Ireland. After their marriage this couple made their home in VA until about 1835, when they removed to Grassy Cove, Bledsoe County (now Cumberland), TN. In 1838 Weatherston S. Greer obtained a grant for a large tract of land in Grassy Cove and in this beautiful valley he lived until some time during the War Between the States, when he moved south into Sequatchie valley, where he spent the remaining years of his life. He died in 1870 and is buried in Bledsoe County, at Wesley chapel." ("Leaves From the Family Tree," from The Chattanooga Sunday Times, October 11, 1936, by Penelope Johnson Allen.)

"Witherston Shelton Greer married Mary Kyle, November 26, 1820, and settled in Bledsoe County, TN, in 1838. He kept a post office called Grassy Cove in Bledsoe County. Witherston Shelton Greer and his wife, Mary Kyle had issue: William, Thomas, Moses, Samuel, Henry Clay, Witherston S., and probably others." (PIONEER FAMILIES OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1935 by Marshall Wingfield, pages 88 and 90, taken from "The Genealogy of the Greer Family" by Joseph Hampton Greer, page 6.) (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Samuel listed above is apparently not listed in the Bible records, as shown below, or in any other lists of Weatherston and Mary Greer children.)

"Weatherston Shelton Greer was born in Franklin County, VA, May 31, 1800; died at Pikesville, TN, March 31, 1870, where he is buried in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. In 1830, he purchased 292 acres of land in Grassy Cove, Bledsoe County, TN, along the George Gordon Turnpike, near his uncle, John Fitch Greer. Here, he established the "Stockmen's Inn;" secured rights for a gristmill to provide shelter and food for travelers and their livestock. His many slaves cultivated the land, amounting to 1500 acres, which were sold in 1868 to Lorenzo Stratton, of Catteraugus County, New York, for $9500.00. Since there were no school where he could send his children, he provided one of his own; employed a tutor to take care of their early training. Later on, they were sent to Mars Hill Academy, at Sulphur Springs in Rhea County; to New Market, to the University of TN at Knoxville, and to Burritt College, Spencer, TN. He married in Franklin County, VA November 26, 1820, Mary Kyle, born in 1803, who had come from Ireland with her uncle, Mr. Calhoun, to escape tuberculosis that was then prevalent." (GREGOR, MacGREGOR, MacGHEE, MAGRUDER, GRIERSON, GRIER, GREER --- A HISTORY OF THE ORIGIN OF THE ABOVE FAMILIES AND MANY OF THEIR DESCENDANTS, "Greer Family Originating in Maryland," compiled by Robert M. Torrence, A.B., F.G.S.P., F.I.A.G., 110 Edgevale Road Baltimore 10, Maryland, page 184.)

"Weatherston Shelton Greer, was born May 31, 1800, in Franklin County, VA. On November 26, 1820 he married Mary Kyle in Franklin County, VA. Mary Kyle came to America from Ireland with her uncle ______ Calhoun. Her parents never came, but sent their children, that they might escape tuberculosis. Other members of the family had died with it.

"Weatherston Shelton Greer lived in Franklin County, VA until about 1830, when he bought 292 acres of land in Grassy Cove, Bledsoe County, TN, near his uncle John F. Greer. Grassy Cove was part of Bledsoe County that was cut off to form Cumberland County. The land he bought was located on the George Gordon Turnpike at the foot of the mountain; where the road enters the cove. Here Weatherston Greer established the Stockman's Inn. This was a favorite stopping place for Drovers on their way from Kentucky to Middle TN, GA, and the Deep South. Droves of mules, cattle, hogs, and even turkeys would stop there for the night. Ample accommodations for these, in a large barn made of logs 100 by 46 feet. A tall gate was place at the Inn and a small box was provided for the travellers to drop in the toll and go on their way. There was also a post office there, named Grassy Cove, TN, which was kept by Weatherston Greer. An old stage coach line used Stockman's Inn, known as Greer's Stand and Gordon's Turnpike.

"During this time many notable persons stayed all night at the Inn. Sequatchee River rises in Grassy Cove and flows through the mountains coming out at the head of Sequatchee Valley about six miles away. Where this river sinks in the ground, is where Weatherston Greer built and operated a grist mill and also a "Still" where he made apple brandy.

"Weatherston Greer cultivated a great deal of land in Grassy Cove, raising feed to keep the great droves of animals and fowls which spent the night at the stand. For doing this he had to have a great deal of labor, so he accumulated a large number of slaves, which were freed during the Civil War.

"There was no school in Grassy Cove. It became necessary to either provide a school for his children or send them away to school. He did provide a school building where his children were taught. Also he sent his children away for higher education. One son attended Mars Hill Academy at Sulphur Springs in Rhea County; one attended school at New Market, TN and another went to Barrett College, Spence, TN. Others, no doubt attended college at other places.

"Until 1856 Pikeville was the county seat to which it was necessary to go to attend legal business. In that year Cumberland County was formed and the north end of Bledsoe County was made a part of it. After that time Crossville had become the County seat to which one from Grassy Cove must go to attend to legal affairs. By the means of travel at that time, it took a long time to make a trip from Grassy Cove to Pikeville. Most of the time a night was spent on the road at the house of a farmer.

"When came the Civil War. Clay Greer and Weatherston Greer, Jr. though lately married joined the Confederate Army. They enlisted August 5, 1861 at Knoxville in Company D Regiment of Cavalry. After the first year, Weatherston Greer became Captain of his Company but was captured in Greene County, TN on October 1, 1863. He stayed in prison the remainder of the war and was released at Johnson's Island, Ohio June 11, 1865 on taking the oath of allegiance to the United States. Clay Greer remained in the army until May 1865, when he surrendered near Jonesboro, TN." (From Mrs. Mary A. Raulston, Star Route, Monteagle, TN, who says some of the information was compiled by Sylvester Greer, Dixiana, Alabama, dated August 15, 1937, as shown in the papers of Martha V. Harris of Phoenix, Arizona, about 1956.)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Most, if not all, of the information about the family and descendants of Weatherston Shelton and Mary (Kyle) Greer was taken from the article, "Leaves From the Family Tree," from The Chattanooga Sunday Times, October 11, 1936, by Penelope Johnson Allen. There are some photographs of some of the Greer family included in this article. Part of this genealogy was repeated in GREGOR, MacGREGOR, MacGHEE, MAGRUDER, GRIERSON, GRIER, GREER --- A HISTORY OF THE ORIGIN OF THE ABOVE FAMILIES AND MANY OF THEIR DESCENDANTS, "Greer Family Originating in Maryland," compiled by Robert M. Torrence, A.B., F.G.S.P., F.I.A.G., with additions and, in some cases, deletions. At least some of the information about the family of Weatherston Shelton and Mary Greer was taken from the William Greer Bible in possession of John W. Greer, Kingston Springs, TN. J. B. Bell has given the basic information on the family (only) of Weatherston Shelton Greer in his book, GREER KINSMEN, 1986, page 25a, and shows his source to be the William Greer Bible and the research notes of Mrs. Russell (Margaret) Bailey, Coffeeville, Mississippi. Was the remainder of the information (that not in the Bible) which was used in "Leaves From the Family Tree," compiled by Penelope Johnson Allen, who was State Chairman of Genealogical Records, TN Society, D. A. R. in 1936, or was it compiled by someone else, originally? An earlier article, also under the heading, "Leaves From the Family Tree," 1934 (or 1936), as pointed out by Robert M. Torrence is the earliest printing of the tradition of William Greer (supposed son of John Greer, the immigrant) immigrating from England, rather than being born in America. The information, however, that was written by Joseph Hampton Greer and preserved by his son, John Franklin Greer, was worked up about 1914, and used as basic material for "The Greer Family" in PIONEER FAMILIES OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, VIRGINIA by Marshall Wingfield in 1935. This tradition has been, to the belief of most Greer researcher, been proven as incorrect, due to the will of William Greer's father-in-law.)

He was married to Mary Kyle (daughter of Kyle and Calhoun) on 26 Nov 1820 in Franklin County, VA. Mary Kyle was born in 1803 in Ireland. Parents: Moses Greer Jr. and Susannah Wood.

Spouse: Mary Kyle. Mary Kyle and Weatherston Shelton Greer were married on 26 November 1821. Children were: William Henry Greer, Elizabeth Charlotte Greer, Harriet Ann Greer, Emily Callaway Greer, Moses Callaway Greer, Weatherston Shelton Greer Jr., Thomas Greer, Henry Clay Greer.

Weatherston Shelton Greer Jr. was born about 1832. Parents: Weatherston Shelton Greer and Mary Kyle.

Weatherston Shelton Greer was born in December 1867 in Dayton, Rhea County, Tennessee. In 1900 he was an a machinist in Dayton, Rhea County, Tennessee. Parents: Moses Callaway Greer and Orpah Foster.

Spouse: Jennie [--?--] Greer. Jennie [--?--] Greer and Weatherston Shelton Greer were married in 1898.

William Greer was born (date unknown). Parents: Moses Greer Sr. and Ann Nancy Bailey.

William Greer Sr. was born about 1709/10 in Gunpowder River, Baltimore County, Maryland. He died on 15 January 1790 in Franklin County, Virginia.
William Greer Sr. was born about 1710 in Gunpowder River, Baltimore County, Maryland. He died after 1785 in Franklin County, VA. "William Greer was born in Baltimore County, Maryland, circa 1710; removed to Franklin County, VA; joined the American Army; served as Captain of Militia under Colonel Calloway; was Justice of the Peace; member of the Legislature; Presiding Judge of Franklin County; became a large land owner and had many slaves. He married about 1730, Ann Fitch, a daughter of William and Sarah Fitch, as will be shown by her father's Will, dated April 9, 1787, recorded in Baltimore, Maryland, Will Book 4, page 284, where he bequeathed 120 acres of land to his son, Robert Fitch, specifying that his son, Robert Fitch, shall first pay to " my daughter, Ann Grier," 18 pounds in gold or silver. Traditions in this family say that William Greer married his wife in England where their first four sons were born; that some were Tories, the others loyal. No records have been found to substantiate this. Mr. Sylvester Greer, of Dixiana, Alabama, a descendant, wrote the compiler, April 7, 1940: "I have never believed that William Greer came from England, but was born in Baltimore County and married Ann Fitch there." The above facts, found later, prove that he was right. The Fitch family came originally from England and may have given the tradition a basis. The names of the children have been handed down from one generation to the next and will be so used." ("Greer Family, Originating in Maryland," by Robert M. Torrence; this is the original writing, not the revision appearing in his work GREGOR, MacGREGOR, MacGHEE, MAGRUDER, GRIERSON, GRIER, GREER; this original write-up came from the Maryland Historical Society, where it is on file.)

"Supplemental Account ... William Greear (Greer) --- Reference is made to page 153, wherein this William Greer is shown as being the son of John Greer of Baltimore County, Maryland. It will be seen that William Greer's children are the same, but one, in both accounts. The accounts to follow contain a great deal of new information of value and interest to members of this family, so it appears to be intelligently fair and unbiased to quote them in full. The lack of accurate dates in these early accounts is a great handicap and detriment in drawing conclusions.

"There are two available traditions concerning the ancestry of this William Greer that closely agree, thus differing from the facts shown on page 153 and those following in that account.

"The first was written by Penelope Johnson Allen, State Genealogist of TN, and published May 3, 1934 by THE CHATTANOOGA TIMES: "About the year 1730, there came from England one William Greer who settled in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. He was of Scotch-Irish descent and during his sojourn in England, he married Mary Finch (some say Fitch). Before coming to America, this couple had born to them four sons, William, James, Shadrack and John Greer. After their arrival in America, four more sons and one daughter were born, Mary (sic, should probably be Moses), Walter, Aquilla and a son whose name is unknown and Rebecca Greer. The four sons born England took no part in the Revolutionary War, except Shadrack, who joined the British Army. The four sons born in America enlisted in the Continental Army and were American patriots. The son, Moses Greer, was in Washington's Army as it moved on Yorktown. He is said to have served as Aide to General Washington. Having married Nancy Bailey, moved with his family to Franklin County, VA, where he settled and accumulated much property in land and slaves. He served as a member of the Virginia Legislature many time and was for fifteen years the Presiding Judge of Franklin County, VA."

"The second account, to follow, is furnished through the kindness of Dr. James N. Hillman, a Greear descendant, who now (1954) resides in Richmond, VA. The facts are his and the only changes made are in format. "William Greear was born in England or Scotland and came from England to America in the early 17th Century. He married Mary Fitch or Finch in England, where four sons were born. After coming to America, while in Maryland, four more sons were born also one daughter." "William Greear Married in Scotland. This emigrant family was accompanied by other brothers and kinsmen, some of whom settled in Franklin County, VA, and another went further South, perhaps to Mecklenburg, North Carolina." This was signed, "W. C. Greer".

(It will be seen that their fifth son, Aquilla, who was born in Maryland, in 1735, indicates his parents must have arrived in Maryland in that year or 1734. The name Aquilla, has never been found in any Grier or Greer records in Scotland or Ireland. The first Greer in Maryland, to be named Aquilla, was born in 1716. NOTE from Robert M. Torrence)" (MacGREGOR, MacGHEE, MAGRUDER, GRIERSON, GRIER, GREER --- A HISTORY OF THE ORIGIN OF THE ABOVE FAMILIES AND MANY OF THEIR DESCENDANTS, compiled by Robert M. Torrence, A.B., F.G.S.P., F.I.A.G., 110 Edgevale Road Baltimore 10, Maryland, pages 153 and 199.)

"William Greer moved to Bedford County, VA between 1746 and 1750, and might have followed his son there. (Bedford County was cut off from Old Lunenburg in 1754 and Franklin County was formed from part of Bedford County in 1785.) William joined the American Army and served as a captain of Militia under Colonel Calloway. He was a Justice of the Peace, a member of the legislature, and presiding judge of Franklin County (which indicates that he must have been living after 1785, as that was the year Franklin County was formed). He became a large landowner and had many slaves." (GREER KINSMEN by J. B. Bell)

In ROYAL HERITAGE OF THE GREERS, Carolyn Beal shows alternate death dates for William as 1785, 1786 and 1802 and that he died in Washington County, VA.

Julian Greer in GREERS THAT GOT TO GEORGIA, states that "Capt. William Greer married Mary Fitch, was from Downs County, Ireland, was born in 1710, fought for the British, his will was dated 2 Mar 1802, and he died 19 Sep 1802. He further shows that this William was not the same William Greer, son of John and Sarah Greer, that married Anne E. Fitch in 1752; as William Greer, son of John and Sarah Greer was born in 1727." (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: It appears that Julian Greer is using information form GREER GENEALOGY (1937) by Sylvester Greer, Dixianna, Alabama, which indicates information from PIONEER FAMILIES OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, VIRGINIA. Both of the birth dates indicated above, are assumptions. Sylvester Greer later said (see first paragraph above) that he felt William Greer was born in America, as were all his children. The Greer information in PIONEER FAMILIES OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, VIRGINIA was taken primarily from the records of Joseph Hampton Greer, not Sylvester Greer, even though Sylvester Greer could have used information from Joseph Hampton Greer in his research. I believe Mary and Ann Fitch were the same person, as given in this genealogy.)

"Tradition has been in the family that William married Ann Fitch in England where the first four sons were born and some were Tories and some loyal to the American cause. Torrance quotes Sylvester Greer, that nothing has been found to substantiate this. Sylvester Greer was a descendant of this line. Many of the descendants of this line removed to Davidson County, TN and other places in TN. They have been treated in several sources, including LEAVES FROM THE FAMILY TREE by Penelope Johnson Allen." (MY GREER LINEAGE by Mary Lee Barnes, 1992, page 13.)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: There are at least two controversies concerning William Greer. This first is if this William Greer is the son of John Greer. I, personally feel, as did Sylvester Greer and Robert M. Torrence, that he was the son of John Greer, and was born in America, so were all his children; and that the family traditions of William being born and married in England were in error. I base my feelings on two basic facts: First, William Greer lived in the same area as John Greer and his children. Second, he named one of his children, Aquilla, a name not used in Scotland or Ireland, as pointed out by Robert M. Torrence. I feel William Greer named his son, Aquilla (born in 1738), after his brother, Aquilla Greer (born 1716/1719), who was the son of John Greer. There are too many coincidences, in my opinion, for William not to have been a son of John Greer. The information that William Greer was born and married in England has been handed down and reused in so many Greer histories, even though it is only a "family tradition," that the information has been accepted as fact, with little additional research.

The information about the family tradition that William Greer (supposed son of John Greer, the immigrant) immigrating from England about 1730, rather than being born in America, was first (judging from the records we have available) written down by Joseph Hampton Greer and preserved by his son, John Franklin Greer, and was worked up about 1914. This writing was used as basic material for "The Greer Family" article in PIONEER FAMILIES OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, VIRGINIA by Marshall Wingfield in 1935. Another source, which gave identical, but more detailed information, of this tradition is "Leaves From the Family Tree," which appeared in "The Chattanooga Sunday Times" newspaper on May 3, 1934, and was compiled by Penelope Johnson Allen, who was State Chairman of Genealogical Records, TN Society, D. A. R. This information could have also been based on the records of Joseph Hampton Greer. A second article, primarily about the descendants of Weatherston Shelton Greer, was also published under the "Leaves From the Family Tree" heading by the same author on October 11, 1936. This tradition of William Greer's birthplace being England, rather than America, has been proven incorrect to the justification of most Greer researchers, due to the will of William Greer's father-in-law and the service of William Greer, Sr. to the American army during the Revolutionary War.)

The second question is whether William Greer, whom I believe to have been the son of John and Sarah, was the same William who married Sarah Freeland, or if William had a son, William, who married Sarah Freeland. Most researchers think there were two William Greers, and father and son, but neither theory has been proven to an unquestionable extent. I believe there were two William Greers; therefore, this genealogy of the Greer family will show two William Greers. This complication was partly brought about by the writing of Julian Greer (see above) who gives a death date of 1802, but this was the will and death date of William Greer, Jr.)
