Only two men of this name are shown as immigrating to the US between his birth date (1828) and his marriage in the US (1868). This Joseph Akers arrived in Piladelphia in 1852. He died in 1913. Family lore says he was a china merchant. He later invested most of his money in a brewery, just as German beer began to be imported. Subsequently he went bankrupt. His wife Mary then sold brewers yeast door to door.
This may be borne out by Census information: in 1870 his trade was "Manufacturing Porter Ale." He had real estate valued at $17,000 and a personal estate of $10,000. In the 1880 Census his work was "Keeps Billiard Room."
