Samuel Eddy was born on 30 September 1640 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Samuel Eddy (John, William), b. Sept. 30, 1640, at Watertown, Mass. (V.R.); d. Nov. 22, 1711 at Watertown (V.R.); m. Sept. or Nov. 3o, 1664, Sarah Meade; daughter of Gabriel and Joanna ( . . . ) Meade (N.E.H.G.R.). It is probable that this Joanna Meade was the second wife of Samuel's father, John Eddy. Boston records give the date of the marriage of Samuel Eddy and Sarah Meade as Sept. 30, 1664.
Samuel Eddy inherited the homestead lands consisting of 40 acres and also 7 acres of land near Widow Barnard's, and 12 acres of upland at Stony Brook. By purchase he added to these lands. He was a cordwainer by trade and held public office of various kinds. He was chosen tything-man in 1683/4, 1693/4 and 1704/5. He was fence-viewer in 1695/6 and town-sealer of leather in 1703/4, 1705/6, 1706/7, 1707/8, 1709/10, 1710/11. Samuel and his wife Sarah, who was admitted to full communion in the Watertown Church in 1690, were very active in church matters. The Watertown records contain the following accounts of his work and relation to the church:
On May 9, 1694 he was one of the men who objected and refused to pay one penny toward the new Meeting House unless it was placed in the Westward end of the town (Watertown Records, Vol. 11, pg. 74). Again Sept. 8, 1696, Samuel Eddy is one of a number who objected "to having Reverent Mister Angier to be minister for the whole town in the new meeting house, where they say the Church hath called him to office" (Watertown Records, Vol. II. p. 83). On July 2, 1697, "At a meeting of the two precincts, It was voted that we doe renew our Call once More to the Reverend mer Henry Gibbs that he be assistant to the Reverend mer Samuel Angier in the work of the ministry in the new meeting house for the town. . . . Voted. . "that . . . and Samuel Eddy, Sr., are desired and appointed to treate with Mr. Henry Gibbs for his acceptance of the call in the foregoing vote and to make Return unto the Selectmen of their doeings there in"
(Watertown Records, Vol. II. pg. 115)
Feb. 18. 1707/B "Voted that we do Desire . . . and Samuel Eddy Senr. to procure som Person or Persons for the carrying on of the worke of the ministrey in sd Cociety for ye next and last quarter of the present year, upon as reasonable terms as may be." (Watertown Records.Vol.V, p. 17.)
On Oct. 5, 1700 at a meeting of the Easterly cociete or Congregation in Watertown, it was voted "That we do appoint Deacon Nathaniel Barsham. Deacon Wm. Bond and Samuel Eddy. Sr. to be a Committee to warn meetings for sd cociete or Congregation when and so often as there be occation. Voted that we do desire the severall Gentlemen viz. . . . and Samuel Eddy, senr., - to sit at the table" (Watertown Records. Vol. V. p. 19).
Again on May 20, 1711. Benjamin and Samuel Eddy. Serer. subscribe for the purchasing:of lands for better accommodation of the minister (Watertown Records. Vol. V. p. 23). In the inventory of his property made at his death there is mention of a Bible and Books on Divinity. From this one would judge that. be was a student of the Bible as well as interested in the works of the Church.
His will, dated Aug. 6, 1702, and probated Dec. 30, 171 1, mentions wife Sarah; sons, Samuel, Benjamin; and daughters, Deliverance Eddy. Elizabeth Min, Ruth Stone, Johanna Eddy, and Sarah Coolidge; and brother John Eddy. The inventory taken Dec, 18, 1711 includes a house and 30 acres valued at £150 and 7 acres near the old mill in Watertown, a twelve acre lot, and an 80 acre farm. The inventory and the will in full are found in Bulletin No. 10, pp. 161 and 162.
