He died on 27 April 1902 in Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois. From the Journal and Records of the Illinois Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, held at Danville, Illinois, Commencing October 1 and ending October 7, 1902; Edited by F. B. Madden (Springfield, Ill.: The Illinois State Register, 1902)
Rev. William D. H. Young was born April 10, 1839, at Jonesboro, Tenn., and died at his home in Bloomington, Ill., April 27, 1902. Bro. Young received the rudiments of his education near the place of his birth, where he lived until he was twenty years of age. He then came west with his family and settled in McLean County, Ill. When seventeen years of age Mr. Young felt impressed with a call to the ministry of the gospel, but did not fully decide until in his twentieth year, when, realizing that he must continue his studies if he entered the ministry, he began teaching school and taught for several terms, working his way through Wesleyan University, where he was graduated in June, 1865, with the degree of A. B. Later he entered Garrett Biblical Institute at Evanston, Ill., graduating with the degree of B. D. in October, 1865. After his graduation Mr. Young gave several years to the itinerant ministry of the M. E. church. His health becoming impaired in 1872, he accepted a position in the city schools in Monmouth, Ill. From here he went to Macon City, MO., and took charge of Johnson College, which school was later moved to Quincy, Ill., and united with Quincy College and the name changed to Chaddock College. Then followed a long illness, after which he moved his family to Peoria, Ill., and again taught school. Regaining his health, he took up ministerial work and was pastor at Hamilton, Carthage, Princeville, Galva, Woodhull, Illiopolis, Homer, Watseka, Milford and Chatsworth, Ill. In 1890, In order to establish a home and educate his children, he moved to Bloomington, Ill. In the fall of 1892 he went to Bloomington, Tenn., to take charge of Bloomington College in that place. He was unanimously re-elected president, but declined, as duty to his family required his presence at home. In 1865 Mr. Young married Miss Sarah Moffatt of Tonica, Ill. Bro. Young entered the work of saving homeless and neglected children. In 1895 as district superintendent for the Children's Home Society, and when the broader work of the American Home-Finding Association was organized, Mr. Young soon became associated with it, serving as assistant superintendent until his death. Mr. Young, like most of the other workers who were toilers in the beginnings of this phase of the gospel, was obliged to perform much labor with but small remuneration, and in his zeal to perform the many duties laid upon him, labored beyond his strength and hastened his declining health. In December, 1901, while taking some homeless children to the home-finding home, he caught a severe cold. Despite his physician's advice to rest and recuperate, Bro. Young, in his desire to house the homeless ones, continued in the work until compelled by weakness to cease from labor. As a pastor he was loving and faithful, as a teacher earnest and consecrated, as a husband tender and true, and as a father his love and devotion knew, no bounds. Bro. Young was a man of culture, of excellent social qualities and of unswerving integrity. He was a man of good natural ability and with more than average acquirements. He was able in the pulpit, faithful as a. pastor and kind as a friend. Funeral services were conducted at the home Rev. Richard Crewes having charge. Presiding Elder W. R. Wiley preached the sermon. There were fourteen ministerial brethren in attendance. Spouse: Sarah Elizabeth Moffet. Sarah Elizabeth Moffet and Rev. William D. H. Young were married on 31 October 1865 in LaSalle County, Illinois. Children were: Stellula "Lulu" Young, Katherine Young, Sarah Young, Wilhelmina "Wilha" Young, Elizabeth Young, William Young. |
