Wheeler-Warren, pg. 82-82 Waterman Goulding4 [Samuel3, Jonathan2, was born in Ward (now Auburn), Mass., on the old Warren homestead, in that part of the town known as West Auburn, 16 May, 1807. He married, 22 Apr., 1830, Mary Eddy, daughter of Samuel and Lydia (Hart) Eddy. She was born at Auburn, Mass., 7 Feb., 1806, and died 3 Sept., 1887. He died 7 Aug., 1886. He belonged to a family of tanners, his ancestors for four generations, on both his father's and his mother's side, having pursued that avocation. His opportunities for obtaining an education were extremely limited. He worked upon his father's farm and in the tannery summers and attended the district school winters. When he was married his wedding present from his father was two dollars to pay the minister's fee, and the loan of his old horse and "shay " with which to bring home his bride. Two years after his marriage his father died and he inherited the ancestral tannery. He pursued the business of tanning with varying success until 1840 when he removed to Holden, continuing in the same business, in partnership with his brother Samuel, for ten years. In the spring of 1850, this partnership was dissolved by mutual consent and he purchased the Edward Richardson tannery located one-half mile west of Holden Centre. The tannery was enlarged and improved and the business successfully continued for more than twenty-five years, his son Samuel being his partner for a portion of the time. In 1874 he formed a partnership with his two other sons under the firm name of B. & H. W. Warren & Co., and this company erected the brick tannery nearer Holden Centre. He still continued the business, with his eldest son, at the Richardson tannery. The new tannery in its character and equipment, its facilities for producing card leather, which is its specialty, is probably, not surpassed by any other in the State. In 1882 the old tannery was abandoned and Samuel became a member of the firm consisting of the father and three sons, the style being changed to W. G. Warren & Sons. The business was successfully continued, being carried on since the death of the father in 1886, by the three sons under the firm name of W. G. Warren's Sons. He was a devoted husband and father, kind-hearted and charitable; a man of good common sense, sound judgment and strictest integrity. He had marked peculiarities and a strong personality. He was an ardent temperance man and a liberal supporter of all the moral reforms of his day. In early life he was an abolitionist and after the enactment of the Fugitive Slave law he made his home a refuge for the escaping bondman. He boldly proclaimed his sentiments in favor of liberty for the oppressed when such action meant scorn and persecution. He and his wife attended the Baptist church, but were not members of the church. Spouse: Mary Eddy.
